If one must understand the heart of Munnar, one must chronicle the journey of the tea plantations that opened up the world to this gem of God's Own Country. And to understand the tea plantations, there is no finer institution than the Tata Tea Museum in Munnar. The history, struggles, losses, the comeback and the vision along with relics of a memorable past, unlock an entirely new perspective on how the soul of this pristine hill station was forged.
Located on the Nallathanni Estate, one can see old machineries used for tea processing, photographs and stories of the trials and tribulations of the first planters. Tea enthusiasts flock to see the Rotorvane, an old tea roller used in the CTC type tea processing. Make sure to never the leave the place without trying out the exotic variety of flavours at the tea tasting unit. The history of Munnar emerges with a number of exhibits on important inventions of the past. Among the most famous is the 'Pelton Wheel', used at a power generation plant set up at the Kanniamallay Estate in 1920s. The famous sundial built in 1913 by the Art Industrial School, Nazareth, Tamil Nadu can be observed here.
Furniture from the old bungalows and establishments of the past can also be seen here.
