LOCKHART TEA FACTORY & TEA MUSEUM

Lockhart Tea Factory, one of India’s largest Tea Cultivators, is situated in Devikulam around 10 km away from Munnar town. Lockhart Tea Factory was managed by Harrisons Malayalam Limited and the factory is on the slope of Chokramudi hills, one of the highest mountains in Munnar. Lockhart Tea factory allows visitors to enter their factory and the Tea Museum which conserves the machinery that was used in the earlier days of tea production. The Tea Trail Tour conducted by Lockhart Tea factory includes the following activities:

DETAILS OF TEA TRAIL TOUR

  • Plantation Walk (1-2 Hours)

Plantation walk is a day tour. Those who are coming to Munnar can opt for this activity. This involves a maximum 3-hour walk through the Tea plantation and interaction with Tea Pluckers to learn the local culture of the people. Moreover, this walk is good for health in the form of breathing pure oxygen and peace of mind. It is a new attraction introduced by Lockhart Farm Tourism in Munnar. The objective of this unique programme is to give the tea lovers all around the world the unique experience of producing their own tea from the tea plant to the cup.

  • Experience Lockhart Tea Museum & factory – 1 Hour

The Lockhart tea factory is famous for its Orthodox Tea produced in the traditional way. The museum includes a living factory which was built in 1936 and a tea sales outlet and tea-tasting sections. The visitors are given a briefing about the origins of tea for consumption, its history & health benefits and explained about the traditional tea manufacturing processes.

  • Tea Tasting – ½ Hour

The guests are explained about tea tasting terminology and are shown ways of making an ideal cup of tea. They are also allowed to taste and savor the various grades of tea produced in the factory.

We had a very nice time during our tour. The scenery was stunning and the tour of the factory was very interesting. So far, my time in India has been spent mostly in a car and it was nice to have a peaceful walk in the fresh air. Our guide, Amanju, was very friendly and knowledgeable and she kindly picked us various berries to eat during the tour.

We unfortunately only had one full day in beautiful Munnar but we are so glad we chose to go on the Tea Trail Tour. This tour combined a trek through the breathtaking landscape of the tea plantations and a visit to a local tea factory. We got to truly appreciate the landscape in which the tea grows then learnt how it was made and even had an education in tasting the different types! Both of our guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and the driver was also very nice. I would strongly recommend this tour if you want to immerse yourself in beautiful Munnar.

We had a fantastic time on this tour and I am so glad we made time for it! The plantation tour walk was so interesting. Our guide, Raj, was so knowledgeable and showed us how the tea plants are grown, maintained, and picked. I learned so much at the factory tour as well. I never knew how complex the tea making process was. The tea tasting at the end was so fun too!
